Tips for Moving During Summer in Oman (Beat the Heat)
Oman's summer is no joke. From May through September, temperatures in Muscat regularly soar past 45°C, with humidity levels that can make it feel even hotter. But life doesn't stop for the heat, and sometimes you have no choice but to move during the hottest months. Whether you're relocating for work, your lease is ending, or you've found the perfect neighbourhood for your family, here's how to pull off a summer move safely and smoothly.
Why Summer Moves in Oman Need Extra Planning
Moving during Oman's summer isn't just uncomfortable — it can be genuinely dangerous. Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are real risks for anyone doing physical labour outdoors. Beyond health concerns, extreme temperatures can damage electronics, warp wooden furniture, melt candles and cosmetics, and degrade adhesives on packing tape. The key is planning around the heat rather than fighting against it.
Choose the Right Time of Day
This is the single most important decision you'll make for a summer move in Oman. The temperature difference between early morning and midday can be 15°C or more.
- Best window: 5:00 AM – 9:00 AM. The coolest part of the day. Many professional movers in Muscat will start at dawn during summer months if you request it.
- Second-best window: 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM. Temperatures begin dropping after sunset, though the air can still feel heavy with retained heat.
- Avoid at all costs: 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM. This is when temperatures peak. Even experienced moving crews struggle during these hours.
When choosing your moving company, ask whether they offer early-morning or evening slots during summer. Reputable companies will accommodate this without issue.
Protect Your Belongings from Heat Damage
Certain items are particularly vulnerable to Oman's extreme heat. Here's what to watch for and how to protect them:
Electronics and Appliances
Laptops, TVs, gaming consoles, and other electronics should never sit in a hot truck for extended periods. Ideally, transport these in your air-conditioned car. If they must go in the truck, load them last and unload them first. Let electronics acclimatize to room temperature before turning them on at your new home.
Wooden Furniture
Extreme heat causes wood to expand and can crack varnish or loosen joints. Wrap wooden pieces in moving blankets and avoid leaving the truck parked in direct sun. If you're moving a villa's worth of furniture, ensure the moving company has a covered truck, not an open flatbed.
Candles, Cosmetics, and Wax Items
These will melt. Pack them in a cooler bag or insulated box, or carry them in your air-conditioned vehicle. The same goes for medications, chocolate, and any temperature-sensitive food items.
Plants
If you're bringing houseplants, water them well the night before, wrap pots in damp newspaper, and transport them in your car with the AC running. Even 20 minutes in a hot truck can kill delicate plants.
Stay Hydrated and Safe
This applies to everyone involved in the move — you, your family, and the moving crew. Dehydration and heat-related illness can set in faster than you think.
- Stock up on water. Have at least 2 litres per person available, plus extra for the movers. Freeze some bottles the night before so they stay cold longer.
- Provide electrolyte drinks. Water alone isn't enough during heavy physical labour in extreme heat. ORS sachets or sports drinks make a real difference.
- Take breaks. Don't push through if you or anyone else feels dizzy, nauseous, or unusually tired. Move to an air-conditioned space immediately.
- Wear light, loose clothing. Cotton or moisture-wicking fabrics are best. A hat and sunglasses are essential if you're going back and forth to the truck.
- Know the signs of heatstroke: confusion, hot dry skin, rapid pulse, and headache. This is a medical emergency — call 9999 immediately.
Pre-Pack Everything Before Moving Day
In cooler months, you might get away with packing a few boxes while the movers are loading the truck. In summer, you want to minimize the time everyone spends working. Have everything packed and ready to go before the crew arrives.
Label boxes clearly so unloading goes quickly too. The less time the front door is open with movers going in and out, the less your AC has to fight against the outside heat — and the lower your first electricity bill will be.
Keep the AC Running at Both Locations
Turn on the air conditioning at your new home at least 2-3 hours before the movers arrive. Walking into a 50°C apartment after carrying boxes is miserable and dangerous. If possible, keep the AC running at your old place too, so the packing area stays comfortable.
Ask your building management at the new location to ensure the AC is functional before moving day. There's nothing worse than discovering a broken AC unit when you're trying to unload a truck in July.
Consider the Moving Truck
The interior of an enclosed truck parked in the Muscat sun can exceed 60°C. This matters for two reasons:
- Your belongings: As discussed above, heat can damage many items. Ensure the truck has a closed, ideally insulated cargo area.
- Loading time: The movers working inside the truck are in an oven. A well-organized, pre-packed move means they spend less time in the hottest spot.
If you're doing an intercity move from Muscat to Salalah, the drive can take 8+ hours. Ask your moving company about climate-controlled trucks for long-distance summer moves.
Timing Your Lease and Move
If you have any flexibility at all, try to schedule your move for early May or late September — the shoulders of summer when temperatures are more manageable. Many leases in Oman end on the 30th of the month, creating a rush of moves on the last few days. Book your movers at least two weeks in advance during summer to secure an early-morning slot.
June through August are the toughest months. If you're moving during this window, a midweek move (Sunday through Wednesday) is often easier to schedule than a Thursday or Friday.
